I tracked my spending for 60 days. Month one: $12.99 sub + $34.99 token pack = $47.98. Month two I tried to be careful and still hit $38. Some users on Reddit report $100-200/month when they’re really into it.
Memory that forgets
This was the dealbreaker for me. Around 50-100 messages into a conversation, Candy AI starts losing context. A character who remembered my name and our ongoing storyline in week one was asking me to “tell me about yourself” by week three. The earlier details just… vanish.
I tested this deliberately — told a character specific details (my dog’s name, a trip I mentioned, a joke we had) and then brought them up 80 messages later. She remembered the dog’s name but forgot the trip entirely and didn’t recognize the joke.

What Candy AI does well
I’m not going to pretend it’s all bad. The image generation — especially the v2 engine — produces some of the better-looking results I’ve seen. The character creator has solid customization: 12 personality types, 12 relationship dynamics, appearance tweaks. And the NSFW content is genuinely unfiltered once you’re on a paid plan.
The UI is clean too. Compared to some of the sketchier AI companion sites, Candy AI feels professional. That counts for something.

I spent some time on Reddit, Trustpilot, and various forums collecting the most common complaints. The 3.8/5 Trustpilot score from 227 reviews tells part of the story. Here’s the pattern:
Cost transparency is the biggest issue. The $3.99/month annual price plastered everywhere doesn’t mention that’s with yearly billing — and that media features cost tokens on top. Users feel misled. One reviewer called it a “money trap” which is harsh but… I get it.

Tried it for a week. The NSFW content is there, the character library is decent, and the interface is okay. But it’s another web-only platform with a token system. Free tier gives you 5 messages per day — barely enough to evaluate whether you like a character. And the conversation quality felt noticeably below Candy AI. Characters repeated themselves a lot, and the responses felt shorter and less engaged.

Look, Character.AI is the biggest name in this space for a reason. Massive character library (millions of user-created bots), decent free tier, and they’ve loosened their filters in early 2026. They added “Character Voice” for voice conversations and “Imagine Chat” for basic image generation.
But here’s the thing — it’s not really competing in the same space as Candy AI. Character.AI still restricts romantic and explicit content. The memory (“Chat Memories”) is basic and doesn’t carry over well between long sessions. No video. And you need a Google account.

Replika
Replika was actually the first AI companion I ever used, back in 2022. It’s come a long way — voice calls work on Pro+ plans, they added image generation, and Replika Ultra has memory save features.
The problem is it’s expensive for what you get. Pro is $19.99/month, and Ultra is even more. The conversation quality is… fine? Not bad, not great. Why I landed on HoneyChat

Who should stay on Candy AI
Real talk — HoneyChat isn’t the right move for everyone. You might want to stick with Candy AI if:

What I’d still like to see from HoneyChat
I’m recommending it, but not blindly. Things I wish were different:

More pre-built characters. The custom creator is solid, but browsing a bigger library helps when you don’t know exactly what you want. Candy AI’s 146 curated characters vs HoneyChat’s 30+ pro characters — there’s a gap.
Free tier bumped to 30-40 messages. Twenty is enough to evaluate but not enough to actually enjoy. Character.AI’s generous free tier is one reason they dominate — people get hooked before paying.
The bottom line
Candy AI is a polished product with good image generation and a professional interface. But the token system turns a seemingly cheap subscription into a $30-50/month habit, and the memory limitations make long-term companionship feel shallow.
