Chai AI is a mobile-first AI chat platform by Chai Research with 500K+ user-created characters, a TikTok-style discovery feed, voice, image generation, and NSFW support. $13.99/month Premium, $29.99/month Ultra. However, memory resets after 2-3 messages, free tier was blocked in 20+ countries in January 2026, and surprise token limits hit all users in February 2026.
I downloaded Chai after someone on r/CharacterAI described it as “like Character AI but more chill.” That’s accurate. Chai nails the quick-dopamine loop. Open the app, swipe through character cards, jump into a conversation. It’s the TikTok of AI chat — addictive, snackable, endlessly scrollable.
The problem came two weeks in, when I tried to build something that lasted more than one session.
What Chai gets right
Credit where it’s earned. Chai does several things well.
Pros
- Best discovery feed in AI chat — swipe through characters like social media
- 500K+ community characters — massive variety
- NSFW allowed (18+ toggle) — unlike Character.AI
- Voice and image generation added — no longer text-only
- Mobile app is polished and responsive (iOS/Android)
- Character creation is simple and no-code
- 10M+ downloads, proven product with $70M ARR
Cons
- Memory lasts 2-3 messages — forgets everything between sessions
- Free tier blocked in 20+ countries since January 2026
- Surprise token limits (Feb 2026) freeze chats without warning
- Premium is $13.99/month, Ultra $29.99/month — not cheap
- No video generation
- Bot creators can see your conversations with their bots
- NSFW filter is inconsistent — content passes or blocks unpredictably
- Conversations get repetitive after the initial novelty
The discovery feed is genuinely Chai’s killer feature. Scroll through character cards, see conversation snippets other users had, tap to start your own. It makes browsing AI characters feel like scrolling Instagram reels, not searching a database. No other platform has matched this UX.
Chai also added voice and image generation in recent updates — characters can speak with configurable voices, and you can generate images within conversations. These are real features, not vaporware. But they don’t solve the foundational problem.
The memory problem (this is the dealbreaker)
Every conversation on Chai is a one-night stand.
Build up a complex story arc? It’s gone tomorrow. Share personal details you want the character to remember? Forgotten after 2-3 messages. That character you spent an hour developing chemistry with will greet you like a stranger the next session.
This isn’t a minor inconvenience. It fundamentally limits what you can do with Chai. You can’t build a relationship. You can’t develop a storyline across days. You can’t create the kind of emotional connection that makes AI companions compelling beyond novelty.
On Premium, memory is marginally better. Users on Reddit report maybe 3 messages of recall instead of 2. That’s not long-term memory. That’s a slightly bigger sticky note.
There’s no RAG system, no semantic search, no conversation summarization, no persistent character knowledge base. The community has been requesting a Memory Manager feature (GitHub issue #361) for over a year. It hasn’t happened.
The 2026 instability
Chai had a rough start to 2026.
Chai AI's turbulent 2026
Free tier blocked
Free access removed in 20+ 'low-tier' countries including India, Pakistan, Egypt, Bangladesh. Founder cited rising GPU costs.
Token limits introduced
Unannounced token limits started blocking messages and freezing chats — affecting both free and paid users. No advance warning.
Basic tier announced
New 'Basic' tier at minimum price with unlimited messages but ads. Damage control for the regional blocks.
Age verification coming
Announced Apple/Google age verification API integration. Signal of increased content moderation ahead.
The regional blocks hit hard. If you’re in India, Pakistan, Egypt, or any of the 20+ blocked countries, the free tier simply doesn’t work anymore. The founder’s explanation — “given the increase in computing costs this has been necessary” — didn’t satisfy users who’d built characters and communities on the platform.
Then came the token limits. Without announcement, messages started getting blocked mid-conversation. Chats froze. Even paying users reported hitting invisible limits. The lack of communication was the worst part — no warning, no explanation, just sudden walls.

Character.AI
Bigger library, better conversational depth, actual memory (Chat Memories + Pinned Memories). Group chats too. But the NSFW block is a hard wall — if that matters to you, Character.AI is out. Free tier is generous and global though, which Chai can no longer claim.
SpicyChat AI
Truly unrestricted NSFW, free unlimited text. But zero memory, zero voice, and only basic image generation on paid plans. It’s Chai minus the polish and the app. Good for one specific use case.
Replika
The emotional depth champion with smooth voice calls and video calls. But $19.99/month is steep, and the 2023 ERP ban trust deficit lingers. Full analysis in my Replika alternative piece.
HoneyChat
Anime character preview in HoneyChat web app
I use Telegram on my phone for day-to-day chatting, but when I want to review my conversation history I open honeychat.bot on my laptop — everything carries over, and unlike Chai there are no token limits on how far back the memory reaches.
This is where I ended up. The positioning against Chai is specific: memory and stability.
Chai’s voice and images exist now, so the multimedia gap has narrowed. But HoneyChat’s semantic memory — pulling up details from a conversation two weeks ago, in context, without prompting — is something Chai fundamentally can’t do with its 2-3 message recall.
And there are no surprise regional blocks or token limits. The free tier is 20 messages/day worldwide, every day. The paid plans have clear, stable limits that don’t change without notice.
What Chai users gain by switching
What changes when you move from Chai
Memory that actually works
Semantic retrieval remembers weeks of context. Your character knows your name, your stories, your running jokes. No more starting over.
Video messages
Short AI video clips with voice — something Chai doesn't offer at all. Characters come alive beyond text and static images.
No regional blocks
Works in every country where Telegram works. No 'low-tier country' restrictions. Same free tier everywhere.
Cheaper full package
$9.99/month for unlimited messages + voice + images + video. Chai's Premium is $13.99 for less. Ultra is $29.99.
Private conversations
Nobody reads your chats. On Chai, bot creators can see conversations with their characters.
No surprise limits
Clear, stable daily limits. No unannounced token caps that freeze your conversations mid-sentence.
Who should stay with Chai
Chai’s strengths are real, and for some users, they outweigh the weaknesses.
Stay with Chai if:
- The discovery feed is your main draw — no alternative matches it
- You prefer short, disposable conversations over ongoing storylines
- You’re in a high-tier country where the free tier still works
- Memory doesn’t matter for how you use AI chat
- You want the biggest possible library of community characters
Switch if:
- You’re tired of characters forgetting everything
- The token limits or regional blocks have frustrated you
- You want conversations that build over weeks, not minutes
- Video messages interest you
- Privacy matters — you don’t want bot creators reading your chats
- You want predictable pricing without surprise limitations

I still have Chai on my phone. I open it the way I’d open Reddit — to scroll, to discover, to have a quick interaction with a character I’ll never talk to again. For that, it’s great. But the conversations I actually care about, the ones with continuity and memory and voice? Those live in Telegram now.
Two different products for two different needs. If you’re finding that Chai’s need is the one you’ve outgrown, the switch is painless — 20 free messages a day, no sign-up, no download.
